Default Non-MM Necro from Beginning of Prophecies?

Due to life stuff, I can only play sporadically and may need to bail out of a game at any moment, so I don’t feel it’s fair to play with others.

So, I want to be able to play solo (with Hench) thru as much of the game as possible and just have fun. I tried a Ranger, but just couldn’t get into it. And an Ele, which is fun with the damage but I fear it will become boring later. No other classes really interest me.

Except Necro. Necro seems very interesting. But I have one nagging concern: If I don’t want to play as MM (because I think it will also become rather boring, and I don’t like having to rush) are there other builds that are effective and fun from the beginning of the game for a solo/Hench player? For example, do curse necros (or whatever) take a long time to get off the ground (like a non-Fire Ele) or are they good from the get go?

I know this post the just drips of noob ignorance. Sorry for that.

Oh, and I only have Prophecies. If the game captures by interest like I hope it will, I’ll buy the others. But even so, I’d like to just finish Prophecies before moving on.

Though it may not seem like it, I have done a lot of forum searching but cant seem to find an answer this the exact question in my mind.

Thank you!

Yeah, Necromancers are quite flexible, both with core build concepts and secondary professions. MM is really only one of the things you can do. Soul Reaping provides a ton of energy so you have a lot of freedom to try different builds.

Not sure what you mean. Are you saying that I'd need to focus on secondary until a capable non-MM necro build is available?

Also, I just wanted to add that mean no disrespect to MM players. I'm speaking strictly from my admittedly limited understanding of what it would be like and my own knowledge of how I'd like to play. By all accounts, its highly effective and therefore likely highly fun. Just not my type is all.

No, he's saying (and after playing one I agree) that the Necro field is pretty large, considering, and there are plenty of options available to you aside from MM.

Blood Magic, for instance, offers really good team support for backing up heroes/henchies. You might end up not having to directly attack at all.

Take necromancer if you are interested in playing a caster class. You are free to radically change your build every time you are in an outpost. In one exploreable area you can go as curses necro, and in the next one as minion master. You might also need to change your armor because of the runes you put in there.

If you start in Prophecies, you don't have that many skills to choose from at the beginning. But two of the more useful necro elites are Prophecies Elites: Spiteful Spirit and Aura of the Lich, so I would say playing as necromancer in Prophecies is ok. There are at least two totally different play styles with these.

On the lowest character levels and in the first 4-6 missions you will use some inefficient random build patched together from the few available skills. That's ok, because you don't have many attribute points to spend anyway, and that is true for any profession.

That brings us to your secondary profession. On lower charakter levels, it is without relevance. But later in the game you might want to spice up your build by adding one or two skills from your secondary profession. I suggest you take monk as secondary profession - with this you have hard resurrection skills at your disposal. If you are halfway through the storyline, you get the feature to change your secondary at will, and from this point on you might want to make "real" builds that are sufficient to beat the Prophecies endgame.

Tip to enjoy guild wars: do not ever run/look for any kind of optimum build. Just do the side quests you find with skill rewards and make your own opinion on what is good. That is enough to pull through with new henchies, a challenge is what makes the game interesting, not copying and pasting from pvx. I didn't have an offensive elite skill as a warrior until the last mission (and hundreds blades was bad), it didn't make a difference. It's about how you make pulls and deal with mobs and target, not about how much you resemble a template. A lot of people will tell you that they have never had as much fun as the early proph days when everybody ran trash, I'd have to agree.
